SA Champs – My Cinderella Story

Apr 13 2019

My husband and I have always chuckled at the way I turn into an auditor after every triathlon I do. Part of the fun of racing Triathlon is that you compete within your Age Group. As a result of this, I pour over the splits after every race, looking at the times of everyone in my Age Group, trying to see where I can improve. “See John, if I had only been 5 minutes faster on the bike and 10 minutes faster on the run then I could have finished in the top ten!” Obsessive, I know, but here’s the...

Well it's not really unique to triathletes: it is common to almost all aspects of life - but when you consider the busyness of life and the combined complication of doing 3...

Durban Ultra

Mar 15 2019

Durban ultra is renowned for its hot and humid conditions that test the theory of “survival of the most hydrated”.And this year was no different...After a night of what felt like no sleep, due to a bad case of ‘pre-race nerves’ ,we woke up to a downpour of tropical rain...But the show must go on..So it was the usual process of: Force down breakfast, pack the last few things and head down to the start. The water was so warm that it was a non-wetsuit (compulsory) swim, which was a bit of a curve ball as I quite enjoy some extra...

XTERRA review

Mar 15 2019

XTERRA Grabouw is one of my favourite events to attend. It is a top class event with a course worthy of a World Championship. I was a bit disappointed with the course change on the bike as they took out some iconic pieces of single track however the course was a lot faster which added another dynamic of racing to the well-known event which was a positive breath of fresh air. I had a tumble during course recon on the bike as well as I cut my foot on a rock practicing my swim exit. This however didn’t dampen my...

Being an Ironman Dad

Mar 15 2019

April 6 2019 is Iron Kids World Champs, according to my 8year old daughter, and anything less than a podium would, for her, be a complete failure.  "you must have fun my Pumpkin, it's not always about winning" She gave me a long blank stare..... "Dad... It's Iron Kids.... Not a park run" and wondered off. I looked at my wife, she shrugged her shoulders..... "definitely your child" she said and she is not wrong. Apart from the obvious biological hints (more Rock Troll than Princess Ballerina) there are the other more subtle hints. Erin, like most children has by...

Unfinished Business

Feb 20 2019

Everyone loves a good comeback story of someone who scaled the heights then hit the skids, but regained his or her past glory through superhuman effort. Well… It’s a whole lot easier said, than done. As I sat on the couch, sipping my 2nd glass of wine, I watched a former training partner and friend become the Ironman 70.3 World Champion. In that moment I felt a rush of emotions: Proud, Angry, Happy, Disappointed, Motivated. It was as if someone had doused my dim flame with paraffin. I left my thoughts for two days before I gave Claire Horner a...
