Spectacular Sun City Ultra

May 16 2019

If I had to use one word to describe my experience at Sun City it would be spectacular! Racing up country and at altitude was a first for me and it certainly didn't disappoint! I was fortunate enough to take the win but what stood out to me most was the spectacular scenery and the holiday vibe at the race village. In terms of the actual race the swim took us two loops around the dam. The morning was crisp and cold with mild water temperatures which might have been non wetsuit friendly in hindsight. Leading out the swim was a...

ITU Pontevedra 2019

May 16 2019

Finishing a successful Ironman PE It’s time to pack the bags and head off to Spain, Pontevedra for the ITU World Championships 2019. The day before we left I packed my bike and realized that the front wheel hub was cracked, OH NO !!!! Not something you want to see the day before, but what can we do. Had no other choice to pack my training wheel. . . Still feeling very unreal as I have been only in the sport for 2yrs and still “finding” my feet - but here I am ready for worlds. After 40hrs of traveling,...

Find your Xtreme

May 16 2019

Car packed, bikes racked, and Wes and I were off on our way to Hermanus for the annual WalkerBay Xtreme event. First up was the 12km CliffPath Xtreme. It was 4pm and we were told to line up under a large blue Hi-Tech banner. I can remember thinking to myself, “let’s see what all those Tuesday track sessions have done for my speed”. The gun was fired, and we were off!! Before I knew it, we were flying down the Hermanus beach road, wow what a spectacular sight! 1km into the race, I looked down at my watch “…3:45… WOW...

Honest feelings of a guppy in the shark-pond

May 16 2019

They say if your dreams don’t scare you they’re not big enough... and I must say that this one really scares me!  I’ve always dreamed of doing sport professionally but I never thought that one day this will really become a reality! I remember when coach Richard and I first chatted, and he asked me what my goals were and that if I wanted to be on the age group podium, he could get me there! “Wow! Those girls are fast and being on that podium is massive!”- I remember thinking... Fast forward 3 years and here we are. 4...

SA Champs - Haydn story

Apr 13 2019

There I was, standing before a pretty wild sea on an early Sunday morning in Durban. The confident swimmers were keen because the waves, well, they pitched up. Glen Gore told those of us who could hear him over the offshore wind, "You want to turn at that buoy there (vaguely pointing at the sea) and then swim around the rubber duck 1km down the beach, and in!" The buoy was the size of a water polo ball, and dark red. So you'd only see it when you swam into it. The gun went off and so did we. There...

Maria's IM Race Report

Apr 13 2019

Migs (our Kona hero) and me. We train in the same MTD squad. We completed the same IM distance and we both trained hard. The difference? Over and above the fact that Migs received a Kona coin, we were the star athletes of the day. He did the fastest most amazing star time and I was the star sweeper.. I was out there, the longest from the MTD crew. Whilst running, or rather shuffling, I had visions of the traffic vehicles following me with Christmas lights to the end line. That is what they do for the slowest athlete after...

Donovan's IM Race Report

Apr 13 2019

Final lead up to race day Two weeks prior to Ironman we decided to race SA Olympic Distance Tri Champs as it was hosted in Durban and it will be some nice Tri Specific practice. Only catch was that it was also at the end of what would be my biggest training week for Ironman, with a 214km bike day 2 days prior to race day and a brick run and a 2hour run planned for after the race, so it was never going to be easy, but there is always hope that the legs would magically arrive on race...
